New site: mixedupjake.com
Well, I’ve been a very busy boy. I finished the Dare Devil’s food mixer and it’s up for auction.
And, more big news: I launched a brand spankin new site: www.mixedupjake.com.
I’ll keep up this blog there from here on out. At MixedupJake.com, folks can also design THEIR OWN mixers. You can customize your own colors, details, and post it on Facebook. If you’re really...

Super Sweet VW Mods
Saw a super sweet old-school VW Bug on the road today - COMPLETELY modded out with flames in HUGE gold flake paint. I resisted the urge to take a photo while driving, and I’m sure all the other folks driving near me were glad. So, here’s a collection of some badass VW mods I found safely at home on the web:
This one is super PIMP - iridescent purple. Kinda looks like a bowling ball.

New mixer with a BITE
Fresh out of the shop: Just finished a special request for an N50 5-quart Hobart mixer.
She may be smaller, but man she’s got a BITE. A blog reader saw my A200 shark/bomber theme from few months ago, and he said he dug it so much, he had to have the same thing done to his N50. I started out with the matte olive base coat, cut the eyes out of masking paper and airbrushed with...
the secret menu... shhhhhh!
I just read about 10 secret menu items from Mental Floss.
The Grand Slam at Wendy’s sounds nasty, but I could hang with the pizza sub and the Neapolitan Shake… Anybody tried these?
Next...
SO PUMPED about the new mixer - doing an N50 this time. And THIS is all I’m gonna show you for now…
Handmade bicycle show 2010
SUPER sweet mod bikes from the 2010 HANDMADE bicycle show - check ‘em out. Dig the custom brake design, the paint outs. The tandems from Bilenky Cycle Works in Philadelphia are total badass. Renold Yip picked up the People’s Choice award for the Sunflower Town design with custom front rack and added stained wood - MOST cool. Some good pics of the crazier stuff at the show here on...

Road trip: Memphis
I took a break this week - headed down 57 to visit some buds in Memphis. Memphis… man, they MEAN IT down in Memphis. I’ve never seen a place that was more… solid, and gritty, and real.
I saw a lot of things there, but here are just a few photos. The trolleys there, old-school. A cool delivery bike. Beale Street, like Vegas but with a soul. Several photos here from a shop with...

I don't know if I see Shephard's Pie...

At the Land of Moo blog, they’re making some fresh soap.
Bake Chicago →
One thing that’s great about Chicago is having so many great bakeries within biking distance. Stopped at Bake last week. Eric and Jennifer Estrella have worked all across the country, and now they’ve opened up their own shop. Fresh ingredients, classic desserts = tasty. The strawberry muffins are great. Give ‘em some love if you’re in town.
McClure's Pickles
With just four years in the cutthroat world of the pickle business, these guys are SUPER serious about their pickles. They’re making big news with their spicy pickle. Dig the site, guys.
NRA show 2010
Way more than you ever wanted to know about the restaurant industry, all right here in Chicago. The NRA show was very cool - saw all the latest machines in the industry, and a lot of speakers.
Check out the Kitchen Innovation awards. The ionized water sounds super sweet - straight out of science fiction.

Visiting Hobart
On Monday, I got to meet the folks at Hobart Corp in Troy - the makers of those super hot mixers that I’ve been painting for the last few months. I dig the old school quality of those things, so when they invited me down to visit, I was pretty pumped. I hung with some old friends in Dayton over the weekend, and headed into the Hobart office on Monday afternoon. Man, they have some super...
Facebook
I just made a page for myself. How self-centered is that? Well, I’ve been doing so many mixer paint-outs lately, I’m working to make it my full time gig. Please, friend my brand new page.

road trip
So… I got a phone call from a dude at Hobart a couple days ago. It crossed my mind that they might be pissed that I’m reselling their stuff, but it went more like I hoped it would. They were pretty pumped that I’ve been doing sweet stuff with their older mixers, and want to talk to me about it. So I’m road tripping it out to Troy, Ohio this weekend, and I’ll roll in...

Photography by Bomobob. I dig the colors in them. It’s like he uses colors that went out of existence 40 years ago. Points on that mixer paint out too, man.

Superbowl: rooting for the team with the best food
Amy and I decided to have a creole/cajun theme to cheer on the Saints in the Superbowl. She made Dirty Rice and I made a King Cake for dessert.
We pulled recipes from Epicurious:
Dirty Rice with Okra
King’s Cake: Straight from the New Orleans Carnival tradition.
Add in a frosty beverage and it was a prime Sunday evening.
I’m interested to hear who else had some awsome cajun food...
Like New
I’m helping my dad finish the mixer tune-up tonight. The speed switch is working perfectly now. Just have to add a little oil here and there so everything moves smoothly. It’s a sweet machine. I’m getting a few ideas about what to paint on it. I don’t just want to do the standard flames - I’m hoping for something more unique. Something bold and iconic… Speaking...
